NYC’s public library system is more than a place to get books. It is a wonderful third space that you can use for co-working, enjoying rooftop views of the city, or learning new skills.
While there are many individual library buildings, there are a few jewels in the crown. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation library is one of them.
It’s the largest circulation branch in the public library system, and it’s right across the street (diagonally) from the famous Main Branch of the NYPL off of Bryant Park.

It has:
Seven floors. Most of these are quiet work spaces. Think WeWork, but without the free coffee. But you’re also not paying for a WeWork membership, so it more than evens out.
🏙 Rooftop terrace: the seventh floor is a rooftop terrace with views of Midtown. It’s definitely underutilized, and it’s a great spot for working, chilling, dating??, etc. There is also a cafe on the seventh floor, although it seems to be closed on Sundays.
📚 Classes and education: the sixth floor is the Pasculano Learning Center. In addition to work space with outlets, wifi, and spacious desk space, there are classrooms. You can lear ****Computer classes, including full introductions to the Google office suite, Python, HTML/CSS, and much more. For free. Search the class list to see what’s on offer.
🎷 studio40: also on the sixth floor of the library is a free media and recording studio. It is generously equipped to record music, videos, and more. From the webpage:
studio40 offers a space for you to realize your own unique and creative projects – completely free of charge. At studio40 you can:
