This is a collection of all the wonderful resources NYC provides for its citizens, often for free or very low cost. They are overlooked and underutilized, despite being of great quality. It’s time for us to change that, and enjoy the fruits of the Earth’s capital city more fully.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library
- Coworking space
- Classes in Python, HTML/CSS, and much more
- Bloomberg terminals
- Rooftop terrace and cafe with views of Midtown
- A damn media lab where you can record anything you want. The library even provides instruments, software (Adobe Suite etc), green screens, and more.
The Main Branch of the NYPL System
- The Rose Reading room, a Beaux-Arts space with vaulted, mural-covered ceilings
- Research services, including long-term room reservations
- Many other smaller study spaces
🌳 NYC Parks Recreation Center Membership
- Gyms, athletic facilities (including pools!), group exercise classes, and more
- $150 annual membership for city-wide access for ages 25-64, free for under 25??
- The signup process for this membership is bad. You have to follow a link to an online PDF that doesn’t load, and then return it in-person to a recreation center. Seems like an enterprising software engineer could bootstrap a better solution to help people onboard more quickly…
